On August 26, 2016, nearly 150 social entrepreneurs, divided into 29 teams, arrived at the Impact Hub Accra, Ghana to take part in the Health Hack Accra, the first Hackathon sponsored by Merck KGaA, Darmstadt, Germany in Africa.

The event brought together biomedical engineers, scientists, programmers and business students from various parts of West Africa attempt to solve to some of Africa’s toughest health challenges, as supplied and presented by our employees. After welcome speeches given by representatives from our Innovation Center and Impact Hub Accra, the ambitious hackers began their assignments.
The Challenges were announced a month prior to the event. On the application form, the hackers had to specify which of the provided challenges they wanted to work on and present their preliminary idea for the solution. The three challenge areas, supplied by our employees, included:
- Reproductive and Maternal Health
- Connectivity and Access to Health
- Non-Communicable and Infectious Diseases
And the Winner is...
After 36 hours of uninterrupted work, the teams presented their ideas to the jury, which consisted of political, business, media and non-profit representatives. Our company’s General Manager of Biopharma, represented our company in the jury.
